A golfer from Saskatchewan achieved his first hole-in-one while competing at the National Special Olympics. Taylor Carter, residing in Regina, has been part of the Special Olympics team since 2013 and has been playing golf since the age of four. The memorable moment occurred at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club during the recent competition.
Carter expressed his disbelief and emotional reaction, stating, “It’s still surreal. I still look out and think I didn’t even do it, but every time I watch the video it just makes me emotional.” His nephew, Ashton Carter, serves as his caddy and was there to witness the remarkable feat.
During the competition’s final stages, they approached the 16th hole, a 135-yard distance. Opting for a nine-iron, Taylor took the shot confidently, leading to the exceptional achievement. The news was first announced by Taylor’s brother, causing jubilation among his family members.
The heartwarming video captures the emotional embrace between Taylor and his best friend Jason, who had traveled to support him during the event. Taylor’s mother, Charlene, expressed her joy at witnessing her son’s accomplishment at a national level.
Despite a spike in his heart rate post the achievement, Taylor remained focused to finish the competition strongly. With the support of his family and friends, Taylor clinched the gold medal in his division by a margin of two strokes, ending the three-day tournament with a total score of 162.
Reflecting on the experience, Ashton emphasized the positive impact of witnessing athletes’ confidence and authenticity, boosting his own self-assurance. Taylor, grateful for the support, acknowledged the importance of celebrating with loved ones before potential future competitions.
