Budget airline Ryanair has released a statement following the abrupt cancellation of numerous flights, leading to passengers being left stranded. On Tuesday, June 2, the airline strongly criticized what they described as an ‘illegal wildcat’ strike carried out by Belgian air traffic controllers.

The strike resulted in the cancellation of 100 Ryanair flights to and from Charleroi and Zaventem Airports, affecting nearly 20,000 passengers and causing significant disruptions to their travel plans. Ryanair expressed dismay over the lack of notice given by the controllers, emphasizing the impact on passengers and the financial burden borne by airlines for air traffic control services.

CEO Michael O’Leary of Ryanair voiced his disapproval of the last-minute strike action, stating that while the airline respects the right to strike, adequate notice should be provided to allow for flight reorganization and passenger protection. The upcoming general strike in Portugal on June 3 may further impact travelers, with potential disruptions to flights from various airlines, although Ryanair has assured that its operations will proceed as scheduled.

This strike follows a previous general strike in Portugal in protest of proposed labor reforms by the government, signaling potential widespread disruptions across the country. Ryanair urges for better communication and cooperation to minimize the adverse effects on travelers and the aviation industry.
