A tragic incident has claimed the life of a seasoned rock climber who fell 66 feet down a mountain slope.
Will Stanhope sustained a serious head injury during his climb on the popular Rutabaga route on Stawamus Chief mountain in Canada.
The 39-year-old climber was rushed to the hospital in stable condition but sadly passed away ten days later on April 23. His family made the heartbreaking announcement of his demise.
In a statement, his family expressed their devastation, mentioning Will’s passion, courage, exceptional memory, and humor. They described him as a kind and gentle individual who embraced every climb with a remarkable spirit.
The climbing community mourns the loss of a dedicated member who considered the rock his home and climbers his family. The family plans to hold a celebration of life in Squamish in the upcoming spring.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 3 pm on April 13. Will, hailing from Squamish, British Columbia, Canada, was renowned for his free solo climbing, a style that excludes the use of safety equipment.
Throughout his life, Will was associated with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.
