Food assistance programs are struggling to meet the growing demand from families facing financial challenges due to the rising cost of living. One such individual is 23-year-old Izzy O’Brien, a resident of Nechells, Birmingham. As a part-time worker and single mother to her young son Finn, Izzy turned to a local food pantry for support following financial difficulties exacerbated by the cost of living crisis and a relationship breakdown.

Recent research conducted by the food rescue charity Felix reveals that UK charities are facing significant challenges in sustaining their services due to the surge in demand. A survey of over 2,700 charities indicated that 32% would be forced to close their food programs without rescued food, and 52% would need to reduce their current level of assistance.

Izzy’s struggles began with the escalating living expenses and intensified when her son’s father departed when Finn was just seven months old. Initially working only one shift per week to prioritize caring for her son, Izzy found herself financially strained as a single parent. She had to rely on Universal Credit, which took weeks to process, and resorted to an advance payment to manage her expenses.

Despite being employed, Izzy was initially unaware that support was available to working individuals. The community pantry at Nechells POD, supplied by Felix with surplus food, played a crucial role in assisting Izzy and her extended family after she moved back in with her parents due to financial constraints.

The demand for food assistance continues to rise, with a significant portion of organizations reporting an increase in individuals seeking support. The pantry membership fee has been adjusted from £3 to £5, yet it remains a vital resource for Izzy during financially challenging times. Balancing work, receiving Universal Credit, and caring for Finn present ongoing financial struggles for Izzy, leading to occasional sacrifices like skipping meals to ensure her son’s needs are met.

Despite the hardships, Izzy remains resilient and ensures her son does not bear the brunt of their financial difficulties. She emphasizes the importance of community support and the positive impact it has had on her well-being. Now volunteering at a local youth club, Izzy gives back to her community while juggling work and parenting responsibilities.

Izzy’s story underscores the tough decisions many parents face in balancing financial stability and time with their children. Her unwavering commitment to her son’s well-being exemplifies the sacrifices she is willing to make to provide for him.
