The prices of key food items are on the rise, leading to an increase in the cost of popular British dishes. Despite this, industry experts confirm that these dishes remain in high demand.

According to Seafish, the average cost of a simple cod and chips is now £11.41, while a portion of haddock and chips is priced at £10.29. To cope with escalating costs of ingredients like fish, potatoes, oil, and energy, shop owners are adapting by introducing new menu items such as kebabs, pizzas, and masala fish, or streamlining their offerings for efficiency.

Seafish reports that there are approximately 7,210 fish and chip shops operating in the UK. Cod, haddock, scampi, and fishcakes are the most commonly featured seafood products on menus, with haddock being prevalent in Scotland, parts of Yorkshire, and the Midlands, while cod remains a top choice elsewhere in the UK.

The study author, Jennifer Robson from Seafish, emphasized the enduring popularity of fish and chips in the UK, calling it an iconic and beloved meal enjoyed by millions annually. The research aimed to shed light on the significant role of fish and chip shops in local economies and communities, providing consumers with access to a variety of seafood options beyond the traditional cod and haddock.

Andrew Crook, the president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, lauded the report for highlighting the economic value and adaptability of the fish and chip sector. He noted that despite facing challenges, businesses in the industry continue to evolve to meet changing consumer preferences while upholding the cherished tradition that is integral to British culture.

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics revealed that food price inflation stabilized last month, offsetting upward pressure from other sectors like airfares. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rate remained at 2.8 percent in May, matching April’s figure and defying expectations of a rise to three percent. The report indicates that while the cost of goods and services is still increasing, the pace has not accelerated compared to the previous month.
