Frustrated residents evacuated from Summerland, B.C., are turning to unofficial sources of information amid a lack of official updates, despite warnings about misinformation. Some have found solace in photos and videos shared online by individuals who remained in the evacuated area, such as an e-bike rider navigating through the deserted streets.

Kerry Gold, a resident, expressed gratitude for the e-bike rider’s videos, which offered a glimpse into the condition of Summerland. Authorities, including Erick Thompson from the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, acknowledged the residents’ frustrations and efforts to access information.

Thompson, known for his informative livestreams, expressed his intention to enter the downtown area of Summerland for a firsthand view and to discuss re-entry plans. The provincial government confirmed significant property damage from the Bald Range fire, affecting several homes and the community of Faulder.

Despite the lack of official assessments due to hazardous conditions, RCMP and Forests Minister Ravi Parmar cautioned against spreading false information about the wildfire’s cause and damage. In Penticton, where many evacuees sought refuge, officials emphasized the importance of relying on credible sources for updates as conditions could rapidly change.

Residents like Gold and her husband, Mike Elsinga, criticized the lack of detailed information provided during public briefings, highlighting the need for clarity on the areas affected by the fire. They emphasized the importance of accurate updates to alleviate anxiety among evacuees awaiting official assessments.

Gold suggested the appointment of a liaison officer to streamline communication with the public, similar to the role played by Dr. Bonnie Henry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Emergency Management Minister Kelly Green stressed the responsibility of district authorities to conduct damage assessments promptly and responsibly before disseminating information to affected residents.
