The Red Arrows have recently introduced a groundbreaking new formation featuring seven aircraft, a departure from their traditional nine-aircraft display. This change comes as a measure to extend the life of the aging fleet of BAE Systems Hawk T1s used by the skilled pilots of the renowned squadron.

Since their expansion in 1966, the Red Arrows have been known for their iconic ‘Diamond Nine’ formation, but they have now opted to reduce the number of aircraft in most displays to prolong the longevity of their fleet. Notably, they will still fly in the classic nine-aircraft formation for special events like The King’s Birthday Flypast and the upcoming 4th of July celebrations in the US this year.

The decision to reduce the number of aircraft is part of a strategic plan to manage the Hawk T1 fleet effectively, as spare parts and critical components, especially engines, are becoming increasingly scarce over time. The Conservative Government extended the service life of the Hawk T1 aircraft to 2030, recognizing their significant contribution to air shows worldwide.

Moving forward, the Red Arrows will continue to captivate audiences with engaging displays at various air shows and events across the UK, Europe, and beyond. While they will operate with seven aircraft for most displays, the team remains committed to delivering top-notch performances that showcase their precision, speed, and teamwork. This adjustment aims to ensure the sustainable operation of the Hawk T1 fleet and pave the way for a transition to a new aircraft type in the future.

Historically, the Red Arrows have flown with seven aircraft display teams in the past, and they will continue to grace the skies with their aerial prowess from May to October this year. However, recent developments have seen challenges for potential manufacturers aiming to develop the next generation of Red Arrows aircraft, with financial difficulties leading to the administration of one such company, Aeralis Ltd.

As the Red Arrows gear up for an eventful display season, their dedication to excellence remains unwavering, solidifying their reputation as a symbol of national pride and aerial expertise.
