A tragic incident has come to light where a young psychologist, Zara Afua Ampong-Appiah, took her own life after researching a substance associated with “suicide kits” online. The investigation revealed that Ms. Ampong-Appiah, a postgraduate research student at the University of London’s Royal Holloway, struggled with mental health issues, leading to her untimely death in April 2025.

Following her passing, the police found evidence on her digital devices indicating searches related to suicide and the lethal substance. Her mother expressed profound grief over the unexpected loss, emphasizing the lack of warning signs despite having a supportive network. Ms. Ampong-Appiah’s case is part of an ongoing investigation by the Met Police into similar incidents involving the procurement of lethal substances from overseas.

The use of “suicide kits” has raised concerns, with reports linking them to multiple deaths in the UK. Notably, a post-mortem examination of another individual, Jane Louise Colechin, revealed the fatal effects of the same substance. The prevalence of such incidents has prompted calls for national guidance on addressing these tragedies to prevent future deaths.

In light of these events, it is crucial to recognize the importance of mental health support. If you or someone you know is struggling, contact organizations like the Samaritans for assistance. Remember that seeking help is a sign of strength and can make a significant difference in times of distress.
