Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the reasons behind a passenger jet’s departure while US President Donald Trump’s helicopter was in the vicinity.
The incident took place as Marine Forces One was approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Tuesday, August 4. This occurrence seems to have breached safety protocols established following a mid-air collision near the busy airport last year.
Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have confirmed that they are looking into the circumstances surrounding the jet’s departure at the same time as the departure of the helicopter carrying the President from the White House.
Following a tragic incident on January 29, 2025, where 67 individuals lost their lives due to an airliner colliding with an Army Black Hawk helicopter, the FAA implemented a directive halting all take-offs and landings at the Washington, DC airport whenever a helicopter passes on a conflicting flight path.
The airspace in the vicinity of the White House and Reagan National Airport is heavily congested with military and commercial aircraft.
During the incident on Tuesday, the airplane ascended above Marine One as the helicopter approached, ensuring that the two aircraft were not on a collision course.
The FAA has reported that a preliminary investigation revealed a momentary loss of separation, after which the aircraft began to move away from each other. The air traffic controller maintained communication with both the commercial pilot and the Marine One pilot throughout the separation issue.
The White House has reassured the public that President Trump was never in harm’s way during the incident, emphasizing the proficiency of Marine One pilots in ensuring safety.
The Marine Corps has stood by the actions of their helicopter pilots.
