Prince William emphasized the widespread impact of homelessness, calling for increased community efforts to address the issue. Celebrating the third anniversary of his Homewards project, aimed at reducing homelessness in the UK, the Prince highlighted the need for more discussions and focused actions to provide permanent housing solutions.
During an event at the Tate Modern museum in London, Prince William disclosed that the project had secured £7.7 million in funding, supplemented by £50 million from Lloyds bank, to propel the initiative towards achieving its 2023 objectives. Acknowledging progress in six trial locations where innovative reforms are underway, he stressed the importance of elevating the conversation around homelessness.
While addressing the cultural stigma associated with homelessness, Prince William urged for collective efforts to tackle the issue effectively. The Homewards initiative, currently trialed in six areas, has shown promising results, with over 73 individuals housed, 250 employed, and thousands reached before facing crises.
The Prince’s commitment to expanding the program’s impact was evident during a visit to Aberdeen, one of the project’s locations, where 31 people now reside in homes provided through Homewards. Additionally, he viewed a timeline artwork at the Tate, commemorating his involvement in homelessness charities over the years.
Highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative, new partnerships have been formed to support tenancies and prevent homelessness. The project’s success has spurred further investments, including a £2.3 million furniture collaboration, to ensure sustainable housing solutions.
Looking ahead, Prince William emphasized the need to scale up successful strategies from the six trial locations across the country.
