NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, according to the Ontario Hockey League. Mayich, 21 years old, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
Mayich’s hockey history includes playing with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. Reports suggest he was hospitalized in Arizona on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery. Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student on the hockey team collapsed during a morning outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and has not disclosed the student’s identity.
Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, conveyed the team’s thoughts and prayers for Mayich’s well-being and recovery while he receives medical treatment in Arizona. The Blues organization also extends its deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time.
OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, expressing support for Mayich, his parents, and his entire family. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, celebrated Mayich’s achievements when he joined the ’67s in 2021 and when he was drafted by the Blues in 2023. Mayich has been a part of the Huskies organization since he was nine years old.
