A nurse employed at a Category A prison expressed deep concern about the safety of baby killer Jamie Varley, who is serving a whole-life sentence for the murder of 13-month-old Preston Davey. The nurse, speaking anonymously to safeguard her job, highlighted the potential dangers Varley faces from other inmates seeking vengeance. She emphasized the need for professional treatment of all prisoners, regardless of their crimes, but admitted that she would feel extreme fear if in Varley’s situation, possibly finding it challenging to even eat or leave her cell.

Following his sentencing, Varley, 37, was transferred to HMP Wakefield, known as “Monster Mansion,” housing some of the UK’s most infamous sex offenders and murderers. The facility has a history of inmate attacks, including fatal incidents involving child killer Kyle Bevan and child sex offender Ian Watkins.

Reports indicated that Varley spent his initial night in distress, refusing food and isolation. The nurse, drawing from her experience with high-profile prisoners in similar situations, shared insights during an interview. She suggested that Varley’s fear of harm from other inmates, combined with possible attempts to elicit sympathy, might be driving his behavior.

Addressing concerns about the medical care Varley receives despite his crimes, the nurse affirmed that all prisoners are entitled to equal respect and dignity in treatment. She refuted notions of staff facilitating “prison justice,” emphasizing the rigorous oversight of any deaths in custody. Regarding Varley’s refusal to eat, she explained that unless he poses an imminent risk to himself, drastic measures such as sectioning are unlikely.

The nurse anticipated Varley would eventually resume eating, drawing from past experiences with prisoners on hunger strikes. Varley’s partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, also received a lengthy sentence for his involvement in the abuse of Preston Davey. Recent reports suggest that Varley is using the name Harry Robb while incarcerated at HMP Wakefield.
