Nigel Farage has violated the MPs’ code of conduct on 17 occasions by not promptly disclosing financial interests. The leader of Reform, also known as “Nine Jobs Nigel,” has faced previous criticism for his lucrative activities beyond his MP salary of £93,904 per year.
On Wednesday, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, released a report revealing multiple instances where Farage failed to register interests within the required timeframe. Greenberg initiated an inquiry following a public complaint about the delayed registrations by Farage.
Acknowledging the breaches, Farage attributed the oversight to administrative challenges and staffing issues, expressing regret for the errors. Despite the significant number of breaches, Greenberg opted not to escalate the matter to the Committee on Standards, citing the inadvertent nature of the violations.
In subsequent correspondence, Farage highlighted the complexity of his varied interests, emphasizing his roles as a TV presenter, successful entrepreneur, and MP. While accepting responsibility for the breaches, he reiterated his commitment to transparency and apologized for the oversights.
During a meeting with Greenberg, Farage emphasized that his earnings stemmed from his personal pursuits rather than his parliamentary position. An analysis of Farage’s financial interests disclosed substantial earnings from travel and secondary roles, including his work as a GB News presenter and brand ambassador for Direct Bullion.
The Labour Party criticized Farage for prioritizing personal gains over constituent welfare, pointing out his substantial earnings from external engagements. Labour pledged to enhance regulations governing MPs’ secondary employment to ensure greater accountability to the public.
