Michelle Tolley was elated when she received recognition at the prestigious Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her advocacy work. However, an unexpected surprise awaited her. The 60-year-old, humorously referring to herself as “59 plus one,” has been a dedicated advocate seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
Last year, Michelle, along with fellow campaigners Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, received a Special Recognition Award at the Pride of Britain event. During the ceremony, while Michelle was watching midwife Agnes Nisbett being honored, hosts Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo announced that all winners, including Michelle, would receive a cruise holiday sponsored by P&O Cruises, the awards’ new headline partner starting that year.
Michelle expressed her joy at the unexpected news, highlighting how it marked a pleasant turn of events after years of health struggles and relentless efforts in supporting victims and holding the government accountable. Michelle contracted hepatitis C through a blood transfusion after giving birth to her first child in 1987, enduring 28 years of illness before receiving a diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
Turning her anger into positive action, Michelle managed a support group for fellow sufferers, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and provided testimony at the official government inquiry. The cruise holiday came as a well-deserved break for Michelle and her husband, who had not traveled abroad since their wedding in 1984.
Their cruise to the Canary Islands in May, booked in celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary, included a surprise vow renewal organized by P&O Cruises. Michelle and her husband enjoyed the luxurious amenities aboard the Ventura ship, relishing the diverse activities and excursions, including exploring Madeira and the Canary Islands.
The couple’s adventures on land, from touring in taxis to tuk-tuks and river boats, added a special touch to their holiday. Michelle particularly cherished the tuk-tuk tour in Las Palmas and the coach and river cruise in Lisbon, appreciating the rich history and scenic views.
Michelle and Dean’s positive experience on the cruise left them eager to embark on future voyages, impressed by the exceptional service, delectable cuisine, and friendly staff. Michelle encourages others to consider a cruise holiday, emphasizing the fantastic facilities and welcoming atmosphere that made her feel like royalty during their voyage.
