Newly uncovered school records shed light on the character of the late Prince Philip during his youth. These documents, originating from his time at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, are now publicly displayed earlier than anticipated at the National Archives in London.

In his final year at the school in 1938, Prince Philip exhibited occasional outbursts of anger, as observed by Dr. Kurt Hahn, the school’s founder. Despite this, he displayed a willingness to engage in challenging and laborious tasks.

Described as a “born leader” by Dr. Hahn, Philip was deemed to require significant responsibilities to fully utilize his capabilities. While his top-tier efforts were exceptional, his second-best was deemed insufficient.

Although scrutinized for his temperamental nature, Prince Philip was appointed as the school captain due to his widespread popularity and respect among peers. Similarly, he was appointed as the captain of the cricket and hockey teams.

Acknowledged for his sense of service, courage, and endurance, Philip was also recognized for his ability to command attention in a room. He excelled in intelligence, accuracy, reliability, and adaptability, showcasing a particular interest in German language and Greek military history.

Furthermore, the report highlighted Philip’s involvement in the Seamanship Guild at Gordonstoun, where he demonstrated trustworthiness and commitment to his duties during expeditions to Norway and Scotland.

Gordonstoun, known for its rigorous educational practices, also saw Prince Charles following in his father’s footsteps by attending the school from 1962 to 1967.
