Graham Wildin, a wealthy individual, recently engaged in a new conflict with his neighbors after alleging that they have been harassing him with fake calls during the night. Wildin, 73, spent over a decade fighting to maintain his unauthorized 10,000sq/ft entertainment complex, leading to his imprisonment. The dispute began in 2014 when he built the ‘man cave’ with amenities like a bowling alley and casino without obtaining planning consent.
Last year, the Forest of Dean District Council began dismantling the structure, leaving it resembling a ‘concrete car park’ in drone images. The complex, once featuring lavish facilities such as squash courts and a bowling alley, was situated at his Cinderford, Gloucestershire property.
Despite local residents expressing relief over the demolition, tensions have persisted as revealed in new planning paperwork. In an effort to address noise management at his Airbnb business on the premises, Wildin’s representatives opted not to disclose a personal number for neighbors to report disturbances.
Instead, they indicated that neighbors could contact the owners’ business, Wildin & Co., for any concerns. This decision stemmed from past issues of receiving prank calls at odd hours, believed to be from some neighbors, which the police did not pursue.
The noise management strategy was recently sanctioned, meeting a requirement for transforming the site into a vacation rental. Wildin’s team installed a noise monitoring system and provided a business contact number and email for prompt response to noise-related matters.
Guests are now restricted from using the outdoor hot tub between 11pm and 7am and creating excessive noise during those hours. Locals noted an improvement in the area’s tranquility since the man cave’s removal.
One resident mentioned, “He [Graham] has his moments but keeps to himself – there’s no disturbance from the holiday home.” Construction work near the man cave continued, with residents expressing satisfaction at its elimination.
A neighbor remarked on the past conflicts, hinting at Wildin’s attempt to resolve issues through financial means. Despite his silence on the prank calls, the demolition marked the end of a prolonged battle with the Forest of Dean District Council seeking reimbursement from Wildin.
The saga began in 2013 when Wildin initiated construction on the leisure complex without the necessary approvals, leading to legal challenges from the council. Despite warnings, he was eventually issued an injunction to dismantle the facility by a specified date, which he failed to comply with, resulting in legal consequences.
Wildin’s subsequent appeals were unsuccessful, culminating in a prison sentence for non-compliance. The recent deadline for him to adhere to the injunction lapsed in early January 2023.
