Shannon Anderson, a mother of three, developed a dangerous addiction to ADHD medication, consuming a daily dose of 300mg of dextroamphetamine, significantly exceeding the recommended amount. This excessive intake, equivalent to seven times the normal adult dosage, posed a grave risk to her life. The medication, commonly known as Adderall, left Shannon feeling paranoid, sleep-deprived, and experiencing physical deterioration.

During the peak of her addiction, Shannon’s body was visibly strained, with her jugular vein pulsating through her neck. She bravely shared her harrowing journey of addiction, recalling the pivotal moment when she realized the gravity of the situation, describing it as a matter of life or death.

Reflecting on her spiral into addiction, Shannon revealed how easily accessible the potent drug was initially. She recalled the simplicity of obtaining a prescription by feigning symptoms of ADHD during a diagnostic test, which led to being prescribed controlled substances.

Before embarking on her path to recovery, Shannon endured severe consequences both mentally and physically due to her addiction. She exhibited symptoms akin to a drug addict, such as compulsive jaw movements, even to this day. Shannon, now happily married with three children, acknowledged the severity of her addiction when she found herself consuming an alarming 300mg of Adderall daily.

The adverse effects of the excessive intake took a toll on Shannon’s health, leading to chronic dry eye, persistent hives requiring steroid treatment, and noticeable physical manifestations like dilated pupils and heightened paranoia. She emphasized the distressing impact of the addiction on her overall well-being.

Shannon, hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, underwent a profound realization when she recognized her addiction mirrored that of intravenous drug users, prompting her to seek help. Engaging in 12-step meetings and establishing her Sober is Chic business, she found solace in the supportive community of individuals battling similar struggles.

While acknowledging the prevalence of addiction to ADHD medication, Shannon highlighted the ease with which individuals can now acquire prescriptions through virtual appointments, potentially exacerbating the issue. She emphasized the need for responsible prescribing practices to curb the escalating problem.

Despite the challenges of recovery, Shannon remains optimistic and encourages others to seek help, emphasizing the importance of choosing life over addiction. Her journey serves as a testament to overcoming adversity and finding hope in the face of addiction.
