A mother expressed discontent when law enforcement officers conducted a search of her residence following the fatal injuries inflicted on her son by her partner, likened to injuries from a severe car accident.
Zoe Coutts, 35, was sentenced to prison for enabling Scott O’Connor, whom she met on the dating platform Bumble, to harm two-year-old Kol Page.
According to court proceedings, the child endured escalating violence while under the care of Coutts and O’Connor. Following a brutal attack by O’Connor in April 2022, Kol suffered fatal injuries, leading to brain damage and eventual passing at the age of four.
Coutts received a 10-year prison term for her role in her child’s death, while O’Connor, aged 36, was sentenced to 18 years for manslaughter with an additional five-year extended licence.
Evidence presented at Southwark Crown Court revealed the severity of Kol’s injuries, comparable to those from a serious road accident or a fall from a height onto a hard surface.
Coutts, from Kent, faced allegations alongside her partner for causing significant harm to her child and fabricating falsehoods to evade accountability, even falsely attributing the injuries to the child’s clumsiness.
During a police encounter, Coutts was heard lamenting, “It’s not fair,” as medical responders attended to the scene.
Following the incident, the toddler was discovered by emergency services on April 25, 2022, unresponsive with facial bruises and a critical abdominal injury likely caused by a forceful impact.
The trial also revealed the exchange of messages between Coutts and O’Connor, indicating neglectful behavior towards Kol’s deteriorating condition.
Medical experts testified that Kol’s injuries, including severe bruising and internal bleeding, were likely caused by forceful actions like punching or kicking.
Kol’s foster parents, in a statement, detailed the excruciating pain and care they provided him before his tragic demise.
Legal representatives for Coutts and O’Connor maintained their respective positions, with O’Connor displaying defiance during his sentencing.
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, the lead investigator, emphasized the severity of the abuse suffered by Kol and the deception orchestrated by Coutts and O’Connor to conceal the truth.
Various officials and organizations expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy and underscored the importance of vigilance and intervention in safeguarding vulnerable children from harm.
