The mother of Sally Anne Bowman expressed shock and dismay after a former Metropolitan Police Detective Sergeant, Jason Grafham, revealed graphic photos of her murdered daughter to colleagues. Linda Bowman criticized Grafham for storing the disturbing images in his desk, stating that he violated her daughter’s dignity.
Grafham, aged 55, retired with his pension shortly before being found guilty of misconduct for sharing the images and making inappropriate sexual comments to female coworkers. Linda Bowman condemned his actions, questioning why he was allowed to retire while still under investigation and expressing disbelief at the lack of immediate consequences.
Sally Anne, aged 18, was tragically killed in Croydon, South London, in 2005. Her murderer, Mark Dixie, was convicted in 2008 and sentenced to life in prison. Grafham, who was responsible for handling case exhibits, was found guilty of keeping and sharing the distressing images and making inappropriate remarks to female colleagues.
Linda described the trauma of discovering Grafham’s misconduct, emphasizing the emotional distress it caused her family. She expressed deep sorrow and anger, stating that the images kept by Grafham exacerbated their grief and disbelief.
The tribunal revealed that Grafham had also made sexually inappropriate comments to female colleagues, further tarnishing his conduct. The tribunal ruled that Grafham’s actions worsened the pain experienced by Sally Anne’s family and that there was no justifiable reason for him to possess the images.
This incident follows previous cases of police officers mishandling crime scene images, indicating a concerning trend within law enforcement. The rise in dismissals and contract terminations of officers due to misconduct underscores the need for accountability and integrity in policing.
Detective Chief Superintendent Angela Craggs issued a formal apology to Sally Anne’s family, condemning Grafham’s actions as disrespectful and incomprehensible. She expressed regret for the additional distress caused to the family and emphasized the unacceptable nature of Grafham’s behavior.
Tribunal chairman Paul Trevers criticized Grafham for displaying the images without a valid policing purpose, stating that it lacked respect for the victim.
