A 61-year-old British hiker who went missing in Spain earlier this week has been discovered deceased. The individual was reported missing near the Canal de Moeño in the municipality of Posada de Valdeón, located within the Picos de Europa National Park. Authorities found the hiker in the Moeño canal, and the Civil Guard will oversee the body’s retrieval, as per information from the 112 Emergency Center of Castilla y León.
The search for the hiker was initiated by the Civil Protection and Emergency Agency of the Junta de Castilla y León, which deployed a rescue helicopter in the operation. The hiker himself contacted authorities, expressing feelings of disorientation and fatigue while returning from a route towards Caín.
A spokesperson from a regional government emergency response coordination center stated, “We are managing a rescue operation that commenced at 7.11 pm on Thursday following a distress call from the Castilla and Leon province 999 ops center, reporting a 61-year-old British mountaineer had lost his bearings during a mountain trek in the Picos de Europa region. At the time, he was unsure of his location and faced adverse weather conditions comprising wind, low clouds, intermittent rain, and fatigue.”
