The Met Office has pinpointed 22 regions that are expected to face substantial precipitation over the upcoming weekend, bringing an abrupt end to the recent hot weather. A band of low pressure is forecasted to move eastward across the country, leading to a drop in temperatures. While temperatures soared to 28.6C in Pershore, Worcestershire, on Monday, a decrease to around 16C or 17C is anticipated by Sunday midday.
The heaviest rainfall is projected to occur in northern England during Sunday daytime, shifting to the East of England in the evening. Showers are also expected in other areas, including the Midlands. Following a dry spell in July and June, many will welcome the rain, especially as over 18 million people are facing a hosepipe ban this week.
According to the Met Office, these weather extremes are becoming more common. Mike Kendon, a climate information scientist at the Met Office, highlighted that 2025 was the warmest year on record in the UK, with a continuous trend of record-breaking warmth in the 21st Century. The upcoming week is also predicted to be unsettled, with rain anticipated on Monday, particularly in northwest Scotland.
Looking ahead, the national weather service foresees a changeable period with a mix of sunny spells and rain across various regions. While northwestern areas might experience more rainfall, even southeastern regions could see showers. Although there is some uncertainty as the month transitions, there are indications that dry conditions might return, especially in the south, with temperatures remaining near or above normal levels.
In terms of the regional forecast, tonight is expected to be cloudy in the north with light rain, while the rest of the country will see clear spells with possible fog patches. Wednesday will continue with cooler conditions in the far north and warm sunshine elsewhere. The weather is likely to stay settled until Friday, with some cloud and showers in the north and very warm conditions in the south. Widespread rain is expected to move into the north on Saturday.
