Seventeen children and three adults were taken to the hospital after falling ill at a restaurant during a party. The incident occurred at a restaurant in Via Roggerone, Genoa, Italy, where the children, accompanied by their parents, began experiencing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea one after another. It was later determined that they had suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Multiple ambulances were utilized to transfer the affected individuals to various hospitals, with some being taken to San Martino hospital, which is equipped with a hyperbaric chamber for specialized treatment. The poisoning was attributed to inhaling carbon monoxide fumes from a malfunctioning heating system.
The Giannina Gaslini Hospital has confirmed that all 20 individuals affected by the carbon monoxide poisoning are currently receiving treatment at the medical facility. The hospital stated that all patients are stable, under continuous monitoring, and receiving necessary care, with some undergoing oxygen therapy in different departments as required.
In a separate incident last month, a suspected carbon monoxide leak at a Marks & Spencer store in Charlton, southeast London, led to a “major incident” declaration. Firefighters detected elevated carbon monoxide levels in the building, prompting a ventilation process to clear the store. Around 30 people were treated for chemical inhalation, with eleven individuals taken to the hospital for further evaluation while the remaining 19 were treated on-site and discharged. An internal investigation is underway to determine the cause of the leak.
