A man who pretended to be seriously ill in order to evade prosecution for sexually abusing children was exposed by his own home surveillance system. John Siddell, 41, resorted to using a wheelchair to avoid facing charges for molesting three boys in Leicester Crown Court. However, his deception fell apart when footage showed him walking unassisted at social events, including Elvis Presley nights.

With the help of his brother James Siddell, John maintained the facade of his poor health, even convincing psychiatrists that he was unfit to stand trial. The abuse of the victims, all under the age of 14, occurred between 2018 and 2021. Following the investigation, John was sentenced to 15 years in prison with an additional two-year extended term, while James received a two-year and nine-month sentence.

During sentencing, Judge Keith Raynor condemned the brothers’ deceitful actions as “scheming and devious,” stating that they manipulated John’s mental and physical conditions to obstruct justice. Prosecutor Claudia James revealed that the brothers led a double life, which was partially exposed through social media and CCTV evidence from their home.

Despite portraying himself as incapacitated, evidence showed John engaging in various activities without any signs of impairment. His ability to walk unaided and perform daily tasks contradicted his claims of severe disability. Medical professionals later confirmed that there was no substantial evidence to support his alleged incapacity.

The victims, whose identities remain confidential, shared in a statement read in court that they continue to struggle with the aftermath of the abuse. The Siddell brothers, natives of Ashington, Northumberland, were absent from their sentencing hearing. John’s defense attorney described him as a vulnerable individual with epilepsy, autism, and learning disabilities, suggesting that his family exaggerated his health issues for personal gain.

In closing, Nicola Potts of the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the severe impact of John’s manipulative actions on the victims, highlighting the profound harm caused by his deceitful behavior and the complicity of his brother.
