London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is set to advocate for a social media prohibition for individuals under 16, emphasizing that it is crucial to mitigate the current detrimental effects. This move aligns with the increasing pressure on the UK government to emulate Australia in elevating the minimum age for online platform access to safeguard young users from platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram.

During a speech in London today, Sir Sadiq is expected to assert that social media companies should be held to the same safety standards as other industries, stating that unless these firms can guarantee the safety of their platforms for children, a ban is necessary to address the existing harms effectively.

While emphasizing that a ban alone is not a panacea for all issues, Sir Sadiq will underscore the need to rethink social media, advocating for platforms that prioritize human connections over profit and do not impose significant costs on users.

Additionally, at the SXSW London event, Sir Sadiq will unveil a £1 million initiative to support boys and young men in London, cautioning against online misogyny that could jeopardize the well-being of a generation of young men. He will call on tech companies to address the spread of misogyny on their platforms and adjust their algorithms accordingly, highlighting the importance of taking action if companies fail to act responsibly.

Furthermore, Sir Sadiq will condemn “manosphere influencers” for promoting toxic content and exploiting young men, stressing the adverse impact on both male consumers and the women in their lives. He will urge for a focus on engaging young men in discussions on toxic masculinity to prevent feelings of alienation and the search for validation in harmful environments.

The announced £1 million initiative will include support programs for fathers and the deployment of football mentors in communities across London. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall hinted at the possibility of a social media ban for under 16s, reflecting the overwhelming support from parents for such measures to enhance online safety for children. The government’s consultation, which received significant public response, is also exploring other restrictions like app limitations, curbs on addictive design features, and nighttime usage restrictions to address the challenges posed by unrestricted social media access.

While advocates emphasize the necessity of a ban, others caution that it could lead young users to unregulated online spaces. Instead, they call for tech companies to enhance platform safety to protect all users effectively.
