Lebanon and Israel have reached an agreement for a 10-day ceasefire, as announced by former US President Donald Trump, who falsely claimed credit for resolving the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, labeling it as the 10th war he has solved.

The temporary cessation of hostilities is set to commence at 5pm EST (10pm BST), as per a statement posted on Truth Social by President Trump. He mentioned having productive discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu.

Trump asserted that the ceasefire was agreed upon after a meeting in Washington DC, marking the first direct talks between the two nations in 34 years, with the presence of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The conflict between the US-backed Israel and Iran-linked Lebanese group Hezbollah began on March 2 when Hezbollah launched rockets at an Israeli military site in Haifa. Subsequently, Israel responded with extensive airstrikes in Lebanon and a ground invasion in the south, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

According to Lebanon’s health ministry, Israeli military actions have led to the deaths of over 2,100 individuals in Lebanon, including 172 children, and left more than 7,000 others injured since the conflict’s onset on March 2. Additionally, around 1.2 million people, constituting about one-fifth of Lebanon’s population, have been displaced.

On the other hand, Hezbollah attacks have resulted in the deaths of two civilians in Israel, while 13 Israeli soldiers have been reported killed in Lebanon by Israeli authorities.

In his announcement of the ceasefire, Trump disclosed that he has tasked key officials to collaborate with Israel and Lebanon in order to achieve a lasting peace. He also boasted about his involvement in resolving nine previous conflicts globally, emphasizing that this would mark his 10th successful peace negotiation.

Contrary to Trump’s claims, there are doubts about the ninth conflict, which might refer to the US-Israeli tensions with Iran that escalated following strikes on Tehran. Trump’s assertions of resolving eight other conflicts have been largely discredited, as violence persists in regions like the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Gaza Strip.

The situation in Gaza remains tense, with casualties continuing even after a ceasefire that came into effect in October 2025. India has refuted Trump’s alleged role in brokering a ceasefire with Pakistan, while Serbia has clarified its stance on any potential conflict with Kosovo.

Trump’s administration previously conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, pressuring Tehran to accept a ceasefire. Meanwhile, the longstanding conflict between Russia and Ukraine, where Trump has faced pressure to intervene, shows no signs of resolution, with no further US-mediated talks scheduled amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

In a subsequent statement, Trump expressed intentions to host meaningful discussions between Israeli and Lebanese leaders at the White House, marking a significant diplomatic initiative since 1983.
