The British military personnel who tragically lost his life in Ukraine has been identified as Lance Corporal George Hooley from the Parachute Regiment. Lance Corporal Hooley, aged 28, was involved in a fatal accident while overseeing the testing of a new defensive capability, as confirmed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently.
In an announcement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of Defence expressed their sorrow over the passing of Lance Corporal George Hooley, highlighting his service within the UK Armed Forces. Sir Keir Starmer also honored the fallen soldier during Prime Minister’s Questions, emphasizing Lance Corporal Hooley’s dedication and bravery in serving the country globally for freedom and democracy.
The government has clarified that Lance Corporal Hooley’s death occurred away from the active conflict zones, with no British casualties stemming from hostile actions. This incident marks the first publicly acknowledged UK military fatality in Ukraine since Russia initiated a full-scale invasion in February 2022.
While the exact number of UK service members present in Ukraine remains undisclosed, it is acknowledged that a limited contingent is stationed there to aid the local armed forces and ensure security for diplomatic missions. Defence Secretary John Healey expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a British service member in Ukraine, extending his sympathies to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues.
