“Jannik Sinner Weighing US Open Mixed Doubles Boycott”

Jannik Sinner is contemplating skipping the newly introduced mixed doubles event at the US Open due to a disagreement over prize money. Last year, the tournament revamped the competition, with Sinner initially planning to team up with Katerina Siniakova but later withdrawing due to illness.

During the event, Carlos Alcaraz partnered with British No. 1 Emma Raducanu, while Novak Djokovic joined forces with Olga Danilovic, preceding the singles draw. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori emerged as the eventual champions, winning a prize of $1 million.

Reports from The Times suggest that players, including Sinner, are considering boycotting the event to push for a larger prize pool and better player welfare conditions. This move aligns with a broader effort by players seeking increased prize money at Grand Slam tournaments, as seen during the recent French Open protest where players limited their pre-tournament media obligations.

On a positive note, Wimbledon announced a £10.7 million increase in the total prize fund for this year’s tournament. The champion stands to earn £3.6 million, and even first-round losers are guaranteed £80,000. Despite the 25% rise in the overall prize money compared to last year, players are advocating for a share of 22% of total revenue, a target that remains unmet despite the recent increase.

Deborah Jevans, chair of the All England Club, emphasized their support for players’ interests but highlighted the complexities of using revenue to determine prize money. Jevans stressed the club’s not-for-profit nature and reinvestment into the sport for sustainability and future growth.
