Iran has fired missiles at three warships in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions with the US and jeopardizing the existing ceasefire. Iranian military leaders have accused the US of breaching the ceasefire by allegedly targeting an Iranian oil tanker headed towards the strait. In response, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters confirmed the targeting of another vessel near the Emirati port of Fujairah. The spokesperson mentioned aerial attacks along various coastlines, with Iranian armed forces promptly retaliating by striking US military vessels and causing significant damage.

This recent exchange followed US military strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Port and Bandar Abbas, which President Donald Trump downplayed as a minor incident. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported intercepting unprovoked Iranian attacks on US Navy destroyers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, including USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Mason. Despite the Iranian assaults, no US assets were hit. CENTCOM stated that they neutralized inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks, emphasizing readiness to protect American forces without seeking further escalation.

President Trump later commented on the confrontation via social media, describing the successful passage of the US warships through the strait despite Iranian aggression. He used a metaphor likening the destruction of Iranian attackers to a butterfly falling gracefully, criticizing Iran’s leadership as unpredictable and potentially dangerous. Trump emphasized the strength of the US naval blockade and hinted at harsher responses in the future if necessary.
