Grab your winter gear because “North of North” is back for its second season in Ice Cove.
The popular comedy series, a collaboration among APTN, CBC, and Netflix, continues to follow Siaja (played by Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman reconstructing her life post a highly publicized split from her husband.
Season 1 was a massive success, ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and receiving acclaim for its blend of humor and serious themes.
“We love comedy that touches the heart. We enjoy laughter, but we also appreciate tears,” said Stacey Aglok MacDonald, co-creator and executive producer.
The show received significant accolades, including nine Canadian Screen Awards, with honors such as best comedy series and best lead performer in a comedy (Lambe).
Co-creator and executive producer Alethea Arnaquq-Baril expressed surprise at the show’s immense success, stating, “We knew something special was happening, but you never know how big it will get.”
Season 2 picks up where Season 1 left off, with Siaja navigating motherhood, work, dating, and complex relationships with her mother, Neevee (Maika Harper), and estranged father, Alistair (Jay Ryan).
The season unfolds as Siaja grapples with her mother’s revelation about an older sister while striving to rebuild her life and discover her true self.
Lambe describes her character’s journey in Season 2 as tumultuous, with things continuously falling apart, leading to a raw and messy phase in her relationship with her mother.
Meanwhile, Neevee, known as “a tough nut to crack,” begins to open up, revealing that she has moved on from searching for her eldest child.
As tensions rise between Siaja and her mother, Neevee’s business expands, and both she and Alistair navigate their evolving relationship.
Authenticity is paramount in the show’s production, with Iqaluit standing in for Ice Cove. The creators emphasize the importance of Inuit cast and crew in maintaining the show’s authenticity and realness.
Season 2 promises unexpected twists, new characters, and deeper exploration of existing characters’ lives. Lambe hints at numerous quests and adventures, with a more in-depth look into the community center and its residents.
The premiere of “North of North” Season 2 in Canada is set for September 1 on APTN+, followed by a broader release on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and APTN TV on September 8. The season will later debut globally on Netflix.
