A video shared on social media captures the harrowing moment hikers flee for safety as a volcano erupts beneath them.
The video depicts a group of hikers standing just a few meters away from the crater of a volcano in Santiaguito, Guatemala at the time of its eruption. A massive plume of ash can be observed shooting up from the ground while rocks and debris are scattered around.
Another video clip taken from a distance shows some of the hikers descending the hillside as rocks fall from above. One hiker can be seen stumbling as the group hurriedly moves away.
According to the Sun, the hikers were traversing a trail known as “the death trail.” This climb is notoriously perilous as the volcano is among the most active in Central America.
Authorities have reportedly banned the ascent of the Santiaguito volcano, but as per ABC7 Eyewitness News, hikers frequently disregard these restrictions.
Users on social media platform X shared their reactions to the incident. One user expressed, “This is why you stay away from active craters. Imagine being in their shoes right now… what’s your first move?”
Another comment read, “Volcanoes don’t send warning texts. One minute you’re posing, next you’re running from hot rocks.”
