A hiker tragically died while attempting a challenging 3,100-mile trail after sending a poignant message a week earlier. Will Standish, 28, was discovered deceased in a remote area of Wyoming on July 29 during his journey along the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada. Search teams located the outdoorsman nearly a week after his last contact with family.

Will kept his family informed of his plans through a Garmin satellite device, with his final message on July 19 detailing his upcoming moves. Days later, he sent a brief check-in and a video from the Tetons, south of Yellowstone National Park. However, this was the last communication received before his family alerted search and rescue teams on July 27. Sadly, his orange backpack was spotted from a helicopter, leading to the discovery of his body two days later.

His family fondly remembered Will as a cherished individual, describing him as funny, smart, and kind. They expressed deep gratitude to the search and rescue teams and bid farewell to Will, expressing eternal love and memories.

A friend, Katie Jackson, shared that Will brought joy and laughter to every situation, leaving a void with his sudden departure. Jackson initiated a fundraiser to support Will’s family in repatriating his body to Australia for a proper farewell.

According to Teton County search and rescue service, Will likely fell from a steep ridgeline, leading to his passing. This was his second attempt at the Continental Divide Trail, with a previous injury halting his first endeavor in 2024. Will began his latest journey in June, intending to explore South America upon its completion.

The news of Will’s tragic demise has deeply affected his loved ones and the hiking community, highlighting the risks and challenges faced by adventurous individuals pursuing their dreams.
