Cases of hantavirus infection have been reported in 13 countries across four continents following the departure of the MV Hondius cruise ship from Argentina.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed two British nationals have contracted hantavirus, with a suspected additional case on Tristan da Cunha, a remote South Atlantic island where the patient remains. The other two infected British nationals are currently receiving medical care in the Netherlands and South Africa.

Twenty-nine individuals, including seven Britons, disembarked from the MV Hondius cruise ship when it docked in St Helena on April 24. Tragically, a Dutch woman fell ill during subsequent travel and passed away. In total, three fatalities have been linked to the hantavirus outbreak on the ship.

The UKHSA has indicated that none of the British citizens from the ship, which is en route to Tenerife, are currently exhibiting symptoms of hantavirus, but they are under close observation.

Health authorities confirmed the first case of hantavirus in a passenger on May 2. Efforts are underway in countries like South Africa, Singapore, and the Netherlands to locate passengers who were on board the ship. The initial two cases from the Dutch couple had traveled through several countries before boarding the ship.

The UKHSA mentioned that the MV Hondius is expected to arrive in Tenerife soon, with UK Government staff prepared to assist British nationals upon disembarkation. Those without symptoms will be aided in returning to the UK.

The WHO has emphasized that the risk to the general public is minimal, as hantavirus transmission is primarily through contaminated rodent droppings and not easily spread between humans. Dr. Abdirahman Mahamud from the WHO expressed optimism that with proper public health measures and global cooperation, the outbreak can be contained.

All British passengers and crew are advised to undergo a 45-day isolation period upon their return to the UK, with ongoing monitoring by UKHSA officials. Efforts are being made to trace individuals who may have had contact with the infected cases.

Currently, two Britons are self-isolating at home in the UK after their return from the ship, while four others remain on remote South Atlantic islands. Additional support is being provided for passengers and crew, with plans for a repatriation flight in progress.
