A candidate who withdrew from the Makerfield by-election has issued an apology for sharing content suggesting that an attack on Jewish ambulances in north London was a deliberate hoax.
Chris Kennedy of the Green Party was initially announced as a candidate for the seat but later withdrew due to personal and family reasons. Reports indicate that Kennedy shared an Instagram video dismissing the arrests related to the incident as a fabricated scenario to perpetuate a false narrative.
In addition, Kennedy reposted a message from a user known as Hugh Anthony, who identifies as an “ethno-nationalist,” questioning the response to the Golders Green arson incident as illogical.
Following the incident involving the Hatzola volunteer ambulance corps, counter-terror authorities launched an investigation.
A spokesperson for the Green Party clarified that Kennedy’s social media posts do not align with the party’s stance. After discussions, Kennedy removed the posts and expressed regret for any offense caused.
The Green Party reiterated its support for Kennedy’s decision to step down, emphasizing the importance of family priorities. Nominations for a new candidate are now open, with the party aiming to offer the residents of Makerfield a diverse selection in the upcoming by-election.
Andy Burnham is running for the Labour Party in the election, while Robert Kenyon represents the Reform party.
Nominations for a replacement candidate are now being accepted, with a selection meeting scheduled for Monday evening. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former Labour minister Josh Simons.
