A grandmother on her way to celebrate her daughter’s birthday tragically passed away after a severe fall that caused a fatal injury to her neck while disembarking from an airplane. Maria da Gloria Pereira da Silva Favaro, aged 72, sustained critical injuries when she fell from the aircraft stairs at Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She was swiftly taken to a hospital following the incident on Friday but succumbed to a skull bleed two days later, as indicated by local reports.
The distressing incident was witnessed by Brazilian influencer Julio Mamute, who was one of the first responders. Recalling the event with emotion, Mamute mentioned, “I saw a person fall in front of me and become motionless.” He further added, “Approaching her, I noticed she was struggling to breathe. She landed on her neck on the final steps.”
The influencer expressed ongoing shock over the incident, stating, “I am still deeply affected by what I witnessed. It will stay with me forever.” He urged for prayers for the family and emphasized caution when using such stairs to prevent avoidable tragedies.
Maria had just arrived on Latam flight LA3785 from Ribeirao Preto in Sao Paulo when the unfortunate accident occurred. Latam Airlines Brasil confirmed the incident, expressing deep regret over the passenger’s demise and offering condolences to her family. The airline assured that all necessary safety protocols were followed, underscoring their commitment to ensuring a secure travel experience for all passengers.
Following Maria’s passing, heartfelt tributes poured in, with dermatologist Raquel Favaro honoring her mother on social media. Raquel expressed her gratitude and love for her mother, acknowledging the immense love and care she had received. Maria is survived by her husband, two children, and four grandchildren, with her funeral held in her hometown of Ituverava.
