The family of a grandfather who passed away six days following an altercation outside a rural pub has released a touching tribute. David Darke, affectionately known as Dave by his loved ones, succumbed to injuries sustained during an assault at The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire on December 21. The 66-year-old suffered a severe head injury and was swiftly transported to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he sadly passed away. A 36-year-old man, who was re-apprehended on suspicion of murder, is currently detained.
In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Darke’s family expressed, “Dave was a cherished father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three grandsons. He was a beloved brother and a close friend. Dave’s memory will endure in our hearts, thoughts, and spirits. He was a resilient, active, intelligent, and compassionate individual who touched the lives of many. He was a dedicated family man with a profound love for life, the outdoors, nature, and hiking. His life was abruptly cut short, and he is now reunited with his loving parents. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.”
A spokesperson from Leicestershire Police stated, “An inquiry into Mr. Darke’s passing, overseen by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), is ongoing. We urge anyone with information who has not yet come forward to contact the authorities.”
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, part of the East Midlands Special Operation Murder Investigation Team, mentioned, “The preliminary investigation led us to identify several witnesses and review CCTV footage from the vicinity. These inquiries will persist, and the suspect will be re-questioned by investigators. This is an incredibly challenging period for Mr. Darke’s family, and they are being supported by specialist officers. We encourage individuals who were in Church Street last Sunday evening and have not yet spoken with the police to reach out. It is crucial to speak with as many individuals as possible to reconstruct the events of that evening.”
