Morgan McSweeney, a former key advisor to Keir Starmer, is set to appear before Members of Parliament next week amid efforts by the Prime Minister to contain the repercussions of the Peter Mandelson controversy.

In a significant turn of events, Mr. McSweeney resigned in February, taking full accountability for recommending Lord Mandelson as the US ambassador, a move that stirred chaos within No10 due to the backlash regarding the peer’s association with the infamous figure Jeffrey Epstein. The influential figure behind the scenes has been called upon to provide testimony to the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee in a rare public appearance.

Facing ongoing scrutiny over Lord Mandelson’s vetting process, Mr. Starmer stood firm today. During a tense exchange at PMQs, Kemi Badenoch insisted that the Prime Minister should take responsibility and step down. However, the PM countered, criticizing the Tory leader for being consistently inaccurate since it was revealed last week that UK Security Vetting (UKSV) had advised against granting top clearance to Lord Mandelson before his appointment to Washington.

Refuting the Leader of the Opposition’s claims, the PM stated, “She was mistaken on multiple accounts. She wrongly suggested that Mandelson was cleared against security advice, that ministers were informed, and that there was deliberate dishonesty. She was wrong, wrong, wrong.”

Despite the ongoing challenges, the PM emphasized his commitment to serving the country diligently, asserting that he was elected by the people to rectify the failures of the past. In a surprising revelation, it was disclosed that No10 had explored a prestigious diplomatic role for Matthew Doyle, the PM’s communications chief, last year.

Although Lord Doyle eventually became a peer, he was suspended by the Labour Party in February due to his connections with a convicted sex offender. Lord Doyle denied actively seeking a diplomatic position and claimed ignorance of any discussions regarding the matter.

In response to revelations that the Foreign Office had dispatched Lord Mandelson to Washington despite security concerns, Mr. Starmer dismissed Sir Olly Robbins, the sacked Foreign Office chief, accusing No10 of disregarding vetting procedures and exerting pressure to expedite the appointment.

The decision to dismiss Sir Olly has raised internal tensions within the PM’s team, with Pat McFadden, a close ally, declining to comment on the fairness of the decision. Emphasizing the PM’s prerogative, Mr. McFadden acknowledged the challenges of continuing without the PM’s confidence in the Foreign Office leader.

Amid discussions at a Cabinet meeting, senior ministers reportedly cautioned against confrontation with the civil service. Downing Street reiterated the PM’s confidence in Cabinet support and affirmed the government’s focus on addressing key issues affecting working people, such as the cost of living and NHS waiting lists.

The unfolding controversy poses a significant challenge for No10, coinciding with the imminent local elections. The saga is expected to prolong as MPs are scheduled to question Cat Little, the top official at the Cabinet Office, on Thursday. Additionally, former Foreign Office head Sir Philip Barton and other senior officials have been summoned to provide testimony.
