BBC programming halted, staff evacuated due to fire at Glasgow headquarters
BBC programs abruptly halted, and employees swiftly evacuated to safety following a fire outbreak in one of the main buildings. The broadcaster’s base in Glasgow was cleared after an alarm went off around 6:30 am. Staff exited the Pacific Quay premises, as reports indicated the fire was localized in a plant room at the roof level.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their response to the incident at the location. BBC Radio Scotland’s Breakfast show was temporarily suspended, with Radio 5 Live filling in the airtime slot. Responding promptly, firefighters arrived on the scene minutes after the alarm activation, with at least seven fire engines present.
The fire was reportedly first noticed by a security personnel member who promptly raised the alarm. Witnesses observed an ‘orange glow of flames’ visible through windows adjacent to the illuminated BBC Scotland sign on the building’s south side. At 8:21 am, BBC Scotland posted on XL acknowledging the emergency, expressing gratitude to emergency services for their swift intervention, and ensuring efforts were underway to guarantee the well-being of all colleagues, with a commitment to resume regular on-air services at the earliest opportunity.
