Thousands of travelers and soccer enthusiasts gearing up for trips abroad have received a critical advisory. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel guidance for Mexico due to planned demonstrations by a teachers’ union that could disrupt travel near Mexico City International Airport (AICM). Travelers are urged to allocate extra time for their journeys and stay in touch with airlines and tour operators to mitigate possible delays and disturbances.

This caution comes shortly before Mexico’s role as a co-host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Canada, expecting millions of international visitors between June 11 and July 19. The UK is expected to send tens of thousands of fans to the tournament, with Mexico City set to host key matches, including the opening game at Estadio Azteca.

Following an initial strike on June 3, concerns are rising about potential future disruptions. The FCDO mentioned, “The airport authorities have issued a notice warning about possible disruptions and advising travelers to allow extra time for journeys to and from the airport.”

Travelers are advised to monitor local media and keep contact with airlines or travel agents for updated information. This warning underscores the security risks faced by visitors to Mexico, where the FCDO already advises against non-essential travel to specific regions due to crime and violence concerns.

Regions covered by the advisory include parts of Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, and Michoacán, as well as areas in Jalisco, Guerrero, and Chiapas. The government also cautions that travel insurance may be invalidated if travelers ignore official advice and venture into restricted zones.

Mexico has become a popular destination for British tourists attracted by its beautiful beaches, resorts, and cultural offerings, while the upcoming World Cup is expected to draw a large influx of international visitors this summer.

Fans heading to the tournament are advised to review the latest travel guidance before departure, especially if planning domestic travel between host cities or tourist spots. Additional information can be found here.
