The executive chairman of Iceland, Lord Richard Walker, expressed concerns that British families are feeling pressured to purchase fake football shirts due to the high prices of official kits. Lord Walker, who also serves as the government’s cost of living tsar, highlighted the escalating costs of licensed merchandise, leading parents towards counterfeit kits that may lack safety standards and are often produced in unregulated sweatshops.
During a session in the House of Lords, Lord Walker urged government officials to intervene with the Football Association and kit manufacturers to lower prices, particularly after the release of £90 replica England kits ahead of the upcoming World Cup. Sports minister Baroness Twycross acknowledged the concerns over pricing but stated that pricing decisions are up to manufacturers and football associations, emphasizing the importance of affordability, especially for children.
Lord Walker emphasized the growing trend of families resorting to counterfeit kits due to the unattainable costs of authentic versions, raising issues of consumer safety and labor exploitation in unregulated production environments. He proposed that the government should collaborate with the FA and major brands to establish clearer guidelines and ensure fair profit margins in the supply chain.
Regarding the pricing of football kits, England’s official adult-sized shirts are listed at £89.99 on the FA’s website, while Scotland’s home shirt, coinciding with their first World Cup qualification in nearly three decades, is priced at £75.
In addition to the cost concerns, a Tory peer criticized clubs for excessive commercialization through multiple kit variations featuring sponsor logos from multinational corporations. Baroness Twycross indicated a lack of awareness of the independent football regulator’s stance on this matter.
The FA has been approached by the Mirror for comments on these issues.
