The families of teenagers who tragically fell victim to knife crime are commending the removal of numerous blades from the streets. Pooja Kanda, Caroline Willgoose, and Martin Cosser, who lost their sons Ronan, Harvey, and Charlie to fatal stabbings, expressed gratitude for the disposal of 14,500 weapons in Home Office surrender bins since July 2025. These surrendered items include a variety of dangerous blades like ninja swords, zombie-style knives, and machetes.

In addition to the surrendered weapons, 783 knives were turned in to a mobile surrender van, coinciding with a decrease in knife-related homicides to the lowest level in 35 years. Pooja, who tragically lost her son Ronan to a ninja sword attack in Wolverhampton, emphasized the importance of each knife being handed in, highlighting the potential lives saved and families spared from the devastation caused by knife crimes.

Caroline, whose son Harvey was fatally stabbed with a hunting knife, appreciated the government’s efforts in addressing the issue of knife crime through initiatives like the installation of surrender bins in Yorkshire. Martin, the father of Charlie Cosser, who was stabbed to death at a party, welcomed government actions aimed at removing knives from communities, acknowledging the life-saving impact of reducing weapons in circulation.

Charity-managed surrender bins in London, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands, along with a mobile surrender van operated by FazAmnesty, have facilitated the collection of blades across the country. The presence of 37 Home Office-funded surrender bins in England has garnered support from individuals like Leanne Lucas, a survivor of a knife attack, who emphasized the importance of safe disposal of knives to prevent harm.

Advocating for the replacement of pointed-tip kitchen knives with safer rounded-tip alternatives, Leanne stressed the significance of reducing access to dangerous blades while maintaining practicality in everyday use. With the government’s commitment to addressing knife crime, efforts have resulted in a notable decrease in incidents, aligning with the goal to enhance community safety and prevent further tragedies.
