Experts are raising alarm over the fragmentation of the global food system due to biodiversity loss, climate shocks, and geopolitical tensions. A report by Anglia Ruskin University and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries highlights the risks posed to the world economy and human survival by chronic pressures on the intricate network.

The report underscores the impact of soil degradation and water scarcity on crop yields, prices, and availability. Geopolitical volatility, such as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, exacerbates food security concerns as disruptions in the supply chain drive up costs.

In the UK, farmers have suffered significant losses from droughts and floods, leading to food price inflation for households. Researchers suggest that civil unrest in the UK could arise within the next few decades due to potential food system crises, with long-term food security also threatened by ecosystem degradation.

Factors like large-scale deforestation in the Amazon rainforest disrupt crucial rainfall and carbon cycles essential for stable crop production. Declining pollinators and overfishing further jeopardize global food production and marine ecosystems.

A recent Government report warns of potential biodiversity loss triggering mass migration, food competition, and conflicts. Aled Jones, director of the Global Sustainability Institute at Anglia Ruskin University, emphasizes the need for new policies to address emerging risks posed by the current economic system.

Actuaries advocate for their expertise to shape responses to financial risks related to food systems, zoonotic diseases, health crises, and cyber threats. Urgent actions are urged to integrate nature into decision-making processes to safeguard food systems, invest in sustainable land use, protect pollinators, and enhance supply-chain resilience.

Government officials stress the UK’s resilient food system and ongoing investments in technology and water supply to ensure long-term food and water security. The call to align financial portfolios with planetary boundaries to mitigate risks to global food security is emphasized by experts.
