The United Nations has convened an urgent Security Council session in response to a breach of Estonian airspace by the Kremlin. Moscow’s MIG-31 jets reportedly entered Estonia’s airspace near Vaindloo Island without authorization from NATO, remaining there for 12 minutes.

In a historic move, Estonia has formally requested this emergency meeting, marking the first such request in the nation’s 34-year history. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna accused Russia of violating Estonia’s territorial integrity by entering its airspace, breaching the UN Charter that prohibits the use of force.

The UN has scheduled the urgent meeting for tomorrow at 10 am to address Russia’s actions. Estonia’s Foreign Minister emphasized the severity of the violation, stating that Russia’s behavior is incompatible with the responsibilities of a permanent member of the Security Council and would be unacceptable from any UN member state.

NATO confirmed intercepting the Russian jets that violated Estonian airspace, condemning Russia’s reckless behavior. Estonia’s Prime Minister, Kristen Michal, mentioned the possibility of invoking NATO’s Article 4 for consultations on threats to territorial security.

US President Donald Trump expressed concern over the incident, stating that he will be briefed on the matter and acknowledging the potential for significant consequences. Following the escalation, Russian diplomats were summoned by Estonia’s Foreign Minister.
