Elections Alberta has announced a call for experienced electoral staff from various regions in Canada to assist in the upcoming October referendum. Maia Hanrahan, spokesperson for Elections Alberta, highlighted the common practice of electoral management bodies supporting each other during election events. She emphasized the need for specialized expertise to support the core Elections Alberta team, especially during the critical post-voting period.
The referendum scheduled for October 19, 2026, will address 10 questions, including Alberta’s status within Canada and other topics related to immigration and constitutional matters. Elections BC and Elections Saskatchewan confirmed receiving requests for assistance from Elections Alberta. Both provinces are assessing the requests against their operational requirements for the upcoming fall elections.
Elections Saskatchewan expressed enthusiasm in providing staff support to Alberta, considering it a valuable professional development opportunity for their team. The recruitment campaign by Elections Alberta has garnered over 30,000 applications from Albertans, showing progress towards the target of recruiting 60,000 electoral workers.
Lorne Gibson, a former chief electoral officer in Alberta, mentioned the limitations in seeking assistance from electoral staff outside the province due to logistical challenges and jurisdictional requirements. He also raised concerns about potential distractions, such as the recently announced Calgary-Shaw byelection, impacting the preparation for the significant referendum event with multiple questions.
