An elderly man was hospitalized following a severe beating by another resident in a care home setting. John Cain, 87, was attacked in a secure garden courtyard on Wednesday night at the HammondCare facility in Sydney. Disturbing hospital images show him with severe injuries, including a bloody and bruised face with blood coming from his ear. His daughter, Margaret, expressed shock and disbelief at the extent of his injuries.
After the incident, John was discovered injured and covered in blood on the veranda of his cottage within the dementia unit. Margaret, who received a call about her father’s condition, insisted on accompanying him to the hospital. The family is seeking answers as John continues to recover in the hospital.
HammondCare has initiated an investigation into the assault to determine how it occurred without detection. The facility’s Executive General Manager, Jenny Summerton, expressed deep regret over the incident and assured that the police and family were promptly informed. Summerton emphasized the challenges of caring for residents with complex behavioral needs and the distress caused by such events.
A 69-year-old man, Geoffrey Innes, has been charged with assault in connection to the incident and is under police guard at Liverpool Hospital. He has been denied bail and is scheduled for a bedside court hearing. HammondCare confirmed that appropriate measures have been taken to prevent further incidents and that families of other residents have been notified.
