The recent trial of a man from Saint John who was convicted of fatally stabbing his two sons last year has shocked many, prompting a quest for understanding and prevention strategies. Roman Kamyshnyy, aged 46, received two concurrent life sentences without parole for 25 years after being found guilty by a jury in June of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 10 and 17-year-old sons.

According to domestic violence expert Peter Jaffe, although the idea of a parent killing their own child is incomprehensible for most, statistics show that approximately 30 children in Canada fall victim to parental homicide each year. Jaffe highlighted that about half of these incidents, known as filicides, occur within contexts of intimate partner violence, where a parent seeks revenge against their ex-partner by harming the children.

A recent study revealed that New Brunswick has the highest number of domestic violence-related homicides in Atlantic Canada, with a significant portion of victims being children. Experts like Mary Aspinall emphasize that in cases where children are killed, they are often used as tools to inflict further harm on the other parent, typically the mother.

In the case of Kamyshnyy, the prosecution argued that the murders were motivated by vengeance, with Kamyshnyy using his sons’ lives as a weapon to punish his ex-wife for alleged infidelity. The tragic incident unfolded on January 29, 2025, when the boys were found stabbed to death in their family apartment, while Kamyshnyy attempted suicide by shooting himself with a nail gun.

Instances of prior physical abuse and the complexities of post-separation dynamics were mentioned during the legal proceedings, shedding light on the intricate factors contributing to such tragedies. Experts stress the importance of recognizing warning signs and implementing early intervention strategies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Jaffe and Aspinall advocate for a better understanding of the risk factors associated with domestic violence and the need for enhanced training for frontline professionals to identify and address potential threats early on. They believe that through education, awareness, and proactive measures, communities can play a crucial role in preventing domestic homicides and safeguarding vulnerable individuals from harm.
