At least eight individuals have lost their lives, and over 80 individuals are unaccounted for following a devastating landslide in Indonesia’s Java island. The tragic event unfolded in the West Bandung district of West Java province after prolonged heavy rainfall caused the overflow of river banks on Saturday. The most severely affected area, Pasir Kuning, saw the recovery of eight bodies with numerous residences buried under mud and debris.
Efforts are currently underway to locate the 82 missing residents, as confirmed by Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson for the national disaster management agency. Fortunately, 24 individuals were able to escape the disaster. Visuals from the site depict a significant portion of the land covered in thick mud, with rescue teams tirelessly excavating rocks, debris, and uprooted trees in the search for the missing individuals.
Following the incident, emergency response teams were promptly dispatched, according to Teten Ali Mungku Engkun, the official in charge of West Java’s disaster management office. Immediate evacuations were carried out for residents residing near the affected zone due to the looming threat of additional landslides.
Engkun highlighted the challenges faced in the ongoing search and rescue operations due to the unstable terrain and persistent heavy rainfall. Residents residing in landslide-prone areas have been cautioned to remain vigilant for any signs of soil movement or rumbling noises, prompting immediate evacuation if detected.
