At least five individuals have lost their lives, and 41 others are currently unaccounted for following a blaze on a ferry in the waters near Indonesia. A significant search and rescue mission is in progress, with teams dispatched on emergency vessels to evacuate both passengers and crew members from the vessel.

The fire is believed to have ignited shortly after the Mutiara Sentosa 2, carrying a total of 250 passengers and crew, set sail from Surabaya en route to Makassar. The ship’s captain notified authorities of the fire as the ferry was traversing from Surabaya, East Java, to Makassar, South Sulawesi, passing Madura island.

The National Search and Rescue Agency, Basarnas, released a video on TikTok, informing that the Surabaya Search and Rescue office was alerted at 8:24 am local time about the fire on the KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2. According to Basarnas, the shipping company reported that the fire broke out between 6:00 and 7:00 am local time (00:00-01:00 GMT).
