Veterans who were discharged from the military due to their sexual orientation are being encouraged to apply for compensation before the upcoming deadline. The Royal British Legion, along with veteran Lee Buss-Blair, is urging former service members to submit their applications for the LGBT Veterans Financial Recognition Scheme by December 12th.

Until the year 2000, there existed a discriminatory ban on homosexuality within the UK Armed Forces, leading to significant hardships for those serving, including investigations, bullying, abuse, and even imprisonment. Individuals who suffered due to their sexual orientation or gender identity between July 27th, 1967, and January 11, 2000, are now eligible for compensation of up to £50,000.

One such veteran, Lee, who enlisted in 1986, faced the threat of losing his beloved job and potential imprisonment due to his sexuality during his military service. Despite his dismissal, he remained disconnected from the military community for 25 years until his involvement in the Etherton Report, which aimed to address the mistreatment of LGBT+ veterans.

Lee’s journey towards acceptance and reconnection with his military background culminated during Brighton Pride, where he felt a sense of completeness and belonging he had long yearned for. His story sheds light on the struggles faced by many who served under the discriminatory policies of the past.

The Royal British Legion’s Director of Campaigns, Policy, and Research, Hannah Pearce, emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by LGBTQ+ individuals in the Armed Forces. The Financial Recognition Scheme, a key recommendation from Lord Etherton’s Review, aims to rectify the injustices faced by these veterans.

Lee’s experiences, from serving in war zones to confronting discrimination within the military, highlight the challenges endured by LGBTQ+ individuals in the armed services. By seeking financial reparations, he hopes to acknowledge the psychological and physical toll of such discrimination and pave the way for healing and recognition.
