The head of counter-terrorism issued a statement in response to the assault at a synagogue in Manchester earlier today, resulting in two fatalities and three injuries, with the suspect being shot dead by armed police.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor addressed the press outside New Scotland Yard, stating, “The police have fatally shot the assailant, and while we believe we have identified him, we cannot confirm his identity at this time due to safety concerns at the scene. Two additional arrests have been made, and counter-terrorism officials have categorized this incident as terrorism.”

He emphasized the importance of public vigilance following the attack, expressing condolences for the victims, their families, and the affected community. Taylor noted the tragic timing of the assault on the Jewish community during Yom Kippur. He mentioned the collaborative efforts of counter-terrorism units with Greater Manchester police in investigating the incident.

Taylor assured the public that law enforcement agencies are swiftly increasing patrols at synagogues and Jewish locations nationwide to provide reassurance and support. He highlighted the mobilization of resources and intelligence to thoroughly investigate the event and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

The incident unfolded when a vehicle struck pedestrians and an individual was stabbed in a suspected terror attack on the holiest Jewish holiday. Greater Manchester Police confirmed two fatalities and three individuals in critical condition outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, where the suspect was neutralized.

Amid reports of a potential explosive device, a bomb disposal unit was dispatched to the scene. The suspect, who was initially identified wearing what appeared to be an explosive belt, was shot by police. Due to safety concerns regarding possible threats on the suspect’s person, the confirmation of his death was delayed.

The synagogue vicinity was swiftly secured by a significant law enforcement presence, including police, fire, and ambulance services, with air support monitoring the area. The streets were cordoned off as armed officers apprehended two additional suspects following the incident.

Witnesses observed armed police officers in tactical gear within the cordon surrounding the synagogue, while a distressed member of the Jewish community expressed concern for loved ones still inside the premises.
