The primary concern for voters heading to the polls this week is the cost of living, with crucial elections underway in England, Wales, and Scotland. Keir Starmer faces a challenging night as millions of voters participate in Labour’s most significant electoral test since the general election.

According to an exclusive poll conducted by the Mirror, over 61% of respondents highlighted financial strain on families as the top priority, followed by NHS improvements (44%), immigration reduction (34%), and crime prevention (21%).

Worries about worsening financial situations over the next year were expressed by 43% of respondents, with 15% fearing a significant decline. A mere 18% believed in an improvement in their financial outlook.

The survey revealed that concerns were high about rising energy bills (33%) and food costs (30%), prompting a majority (58%) to call for increased government intervention amid surging global prices due to the Iran conflict.

Deltapoll’s survey underscores the tough road ahead for Labour, with Reform UK leading in voter preference at 29%, followed by Labour at 21%, the Tories at 19%, the Greens at 12%, and the Lib Dems at 9%. Notably, only half of 2024 Labour voters would still support the party, with Reform and the Greens gaining favor.

In Scotland, the SNP leads with 35%, while in Wales, Reform and Plaid Cymru are neck-and-neck at 25% and 24%, respectively, with Labour trailing at 22%.

Despite negative approval ratings for all party leaders, TUC general secretary Paul Nowak emphasized the urgent need to address the cost of living crisis, exacerbated by recent global events.

Joe Twyman of Deltapoll highlighted the significance of these elections as a barometer for future General Elections, pointing out the government’s challenges in addressing public concerns and the Prime Minister’s unpopularity.

A Labour campaign insider reiterated the party’s commitment to easing the cost of living, enhancing the NHS, and investing in local communities, emphasizing their support for struggling families through various initiatives.

With the stakes high and voter sentiments indicating a tough battle ahead, the elections this week will serve as a critical test for political parties vying for public trust and support.
